Expressions of Compassion

The Mustard Seed

According to a count in 2006, 3,436 people are homeless in Calgary (for more stats click here).  We have a great opportunity to share Christ’s love for these people and act as Good Samaritan’s (Luke 10:25-37) towards them.

Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: that man is here for the sake of other men.”

Join us in seeking to enrich and better the lives of many of Calgary’s homeless community at The Foothills Mustard Seed location. Afterwards you are welcome to join Erik and the others for coffee at the local Starbucks. Together we can make a difference as we extend a Christ like hand of the greatest compassion!

Re:Genesis: Finding New Life in the Midst of the Greatest Challenges

Re:GenesisDo you face physical challenges in your life? Emotional or psychological challenges? Or are you connected to anyone who does?

It is said that, “Adversity is the foundation of virtue” and together that virtue founded in faith can lead us to new life and a community of friends which can support and lift us up. We will find friendship, inspiration, acceptance, spirituality, purpose, and transformation as we hear encouraging words and engage with one another.

Join us in gathering once a month for Dinner, an Engaging Speaker, and time to find fellowship with one another. Together we can Find New Life in the Midst of the Greatest Challenges.

“The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable.” - 1 Corinthians 12:21-22

The Mars Hill Experience: Seeking Christian Relationships With Those at the Body, Soul, and Spirit Expo

This movie requires Adobe Flash for playback.

Serving HandsPerhaps one of my favorite stories in Acts is of when Paul and Silas visit Athens and the home of the Olympics. Surrounded by their art, there architecture, culture, and the people who were in desperate need to seek a god to which was unknown to them; Paul brings a message of truth, of love, of acceptance, and makes an unknown god become a known God.

Even today his opening statement to the philosophers and teachers seems to reach through the fabric of time and speak to the people of Calgary and even the world as we know it.

“People of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed your many objects of worship, I found also an alter with this inscription, ‘To An Unknown God’.” – Acts 17:22-23

Every September and April the Body, Soul, and Spirit Expo comes to Calgary. As I picture the many people walking up and down the rows of different objects of worship and “temples to unknown gods” I cannot help but sense the calling of Jesus to follow in his footsteps as Paul did and live out the gospel message in the midst of these people.

Relax.Sit.Pray

That is why I would like to invite you to join us as we ‘Relax, Sit, & Pray’ with those who will be at the Body, Soul, and Spirit Expo that weekend. Come out with us as together we can Encounter, Experience, and find Expressions of Jesus in the midst of those who are seeking him most. Together we can bring the Way, the Truth, the Life, and a Light into a place where there once was darkness!!

“What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.” – Acts 17:23

ESLCalgary’s new comers to Canada community is growing at a rapid pace, while more and more temporary foreign workers and international students are choosing Calgary as a place of temporary residence. In 2006 it was estimated that 2,165 SE Calgary residents spoke English or were learning English as a second language. With a general population that is growing by 5% a year, the new comer population must also be greatly increasing which makes the need for clear and expressive communication all the more important.

Expressions Community would like to invite you to join those who are learning to speak English in Conversations of ESL every second Sunday at the McKenzie Towne Church between 2 pm – 3:30 pm. So come on out, grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair, and engage in a rich cultural conversation as you help local new comers learn the expressive language of English!

When: Every Second Sunday (Bi-Weekly)

Where: McKenzie Towne Church – #7 McKenzie Towne Gate SE

Time: 2 pm – 3:30 pm

“There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.”

1 Corinthians 14:10-12
